Help: Corona made me lose my hair!

Corona hair loss

Corona sucks! Especially when, in addition to the whole pandemic StressIn the end, the patient suffers from late effects of a corona disease, including all restrictions and an infection. A relatively common late consequence of corona is for example Hair loss! More and more people are reporting this problem - even if the course of the disease was quite mild. And the worst thing is: those affected report that the hair loss can occur even months after the actual illnesses, when you think you are out of the woods and the actual Covid symptoms have long since subsided.

But in addition to the classic corona symptoms, an infection unfortunately also affects the entire body, including all organs and vessels. And sometimes Covid also causes tufts of hair loss, which can cause panic among those affected. If this is the case with you, however, you should remain calm: Fear is never a good advisor. Here you will find all the information you need to know about this topic!

These hair loss patterns occur frequently in Corona patients!

Most often, hair loss after a corona infection occurs in the following manifestations:

  • Diffuse hair loss: The hair becomes thinner, the scalp shines through more and more! In diffuse hair loss, the hair on the entire head falls out more and more!
  • Circular hair loss: Here, individual bald patches appear on the head or even on other hairy parts of the body.
  • Scarring alopecia: Individual areas become inflamed - and the hair then falls out more!

In some cases, these hair loss patterns can also occur in combination. However, the severity of the corona process is not related to the amount of hair you lose. In most cases, hair loss does not start until six to eight weeks after the disease.

What is the connection between Corona and hair loss?

What is actually the cause of the annoying hair loss after a corona infection? According to initial medical examinations, it is a reaction of the body to the stress of the disease. An infection with the corona virus often leads to the development of a so-called telogen effluvium.

What is telogen effluvium?

In telogen effluvium, the hairs get stuck in the telogen resting phase of the hair growth cycle and the new hairs unfortunately do not have the strength to grow. Both a febrile illness - such as corona - and acute stress situations can trigger this. Of course, this does not mean that every Corona patient directly suffers from hair loss. But unfortunately, the phenomenon is becoming more and more frequent. Unfortunately, the exact causes are still unknown. The good news is that this type of hair loss usually goes away on its own. From time to time, however, it unfortunately turns into a chronic condition, especially if there are still residual symptoms of the infection (long covid) or chronic stress. Another factor is age: many corona patients are already somewhat older. With them, age-related hair loss often plays a role in general, which is why the chronic form unfortunately develops even more frequently in them.

When should you go to the doctor with hair loss?

As a general rule of thumb, if you lose more than 100 hairs per day, you should go to the doctor! Especially if the hair loss occurs in connection with inflammations of the scalp (pain, redness, swelling). An important point: The 100 hairs that may normally fall out per day do not necessarily fall out completely, but remain loosely in the hair follicle for a few days. They only fall out for good with the next mechanical stress (such as hair washing and brushing)!

So if you wash your hair twice a week, for example, you will have considerably more than 100 hairs in your hairbrush, because the loosened hairs from the previous days had not yet fallen out.

Does hair loss due to Corona go away on its own?

According to the current state of knowledge, scientists assume that covid-related hair loss is reversible, i.e. it also goes back on its own. In most patients, the hair loss at least subsides after a certain time. However, there are simply not enough studies on the subject to definitively prove reversibility.

These foods help against hair loss after Corona!

Particularly effective against hair loss helps the vitamin Biotin. But also the regular intake of all other vitamins and minerals is a real benefit for the hair as well as for the skin and nails. The following foods are absolutely recommended if you don't want to suffer from hair loss:

  • Peanuts or nuts in general
  • Eggs
  • Pork and beef
  • Fish
  • Cheese and dairy products in general
  • Oatmeal
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Spinach
  • Soybeans
  • Mushrooms
  • Rice

With a balanced diet, it is in principle very easy to supply the body with sufficient biotin. However, one decisive factor that can extremely inhibit the supply of biotin is: Negative stress in everyday life! If this is difficult to eliminate, it is advisable to additionally resort to food supplements in the form of tablets. Biotin capsules usually also contain Zinc and selenium and thus also provide other important building blocks that support the growth of hair. The recommended daily dose of biotin is at least 50 micrograms. A balanced diet is generally very important for your health!
