Hair loss after vaccination?

Hair loss after vaccination

Hair loss is a very annoying problem that, in the worst case, can significantly limit self-confidence. After all, a full head of hair stands for youthfulness and beauty. When one suffers from hair loss, however, the hair on the head becomes increasingly thinner and with every hair that falls out, one's self-esteem also shrinks. Such a Hair loss can have many causes have.

In internet forums, Facebook and the like, the question is now coming up more and more often among those affected: Is it possible that the hair loss is due to the Corona vaccination? We have researched for you in order to answer this question, which is currently frequently asked on the internet, with all the information currently available on the subject.

Can the Corona vaccine really cause hair loss?

Do you really have to be afraid of hair loss after a Corona vaccination with Biontech Pfizer, Moderna and Co. To be able to answer this question 100 per cent, to be honest, there is unfortunately still a lack of sufficient data and long-term scientific studies. Diffuse hair loss can in principle occur after illnesses, immunological conflicts and thus also vaccinations - but only in very rare cases! And doctors are certain: If the problem of hair loss was really triggered by the COVID-19 vaccination, it will certainly not persist in the long term: Permanent hair loss after vaccination is not known so far.

Hair loss after corona disease

The risk of suffering from hair loss after contracting the corona virus is considerably higher: according to statistics, hair loss is one of the rather frequent late consequences of corona disease. More and more people report this problem - and usually only months after the disease, when the symptoms have long since subsided and even if the course was very mild. Hair loss often occurs months after the actual infection, when people think they are long out of the woods. It is therefore one of the dreaded long-term consequences of a corona disease and officially counts as one of the side effects of Long Covid. The reason for this is quite simply the weakened immune system.

A corona infection affects the entire body, including all organs and vessels. Sometimes, unfortunately, a corona infection also causes tufts of hair loss! The good news is: According to the current state of science, hair loss caused by corona is reversible - which means it goes away all by itself. Treatment or therapy is therefore not necessary. But unfortunately, there are still not enough studies on this topic to definitively prove reversibility.

These forms of hair loss often occur in Corona patients!

Hair loss after corona disease usually occurs in the following forms:

  • Diffuse hair loss: Here, the hair slowly becomes thinner and falls out more on the entire head. The scalp shines through more and more.
  • Scarring alopecia: In this form, individual areas become inflamed, in which the hair then increasingly falls out.
  • Circular hair loss (Alopecia areata)Here, bald patches appear sporadically on the head. This type of hair loss can affect all parts of the body.

Sometimes these hair loss patterns can occur in combination. The severity of the corona process is not related to the intensity of the hair loss. Most of the time, hair loss does not start until six to eight weeks after the actual disease.

When should you see a doctor about hair loss?

The rule of thumb is: If you lose more than 100 hairs per day, you should see a doctor. Especially if the hair loss occurs in conjunction with inflammation of the scalp. Important: The 100 hairs that may fall out on average per day do not usually fall out completely, but often remain loosely in the hair follicle for a few days. They then fall out for good only with the next mechanical stress (such as brushing or hair washing)! If you wash your hair twice a week, you will have more than 100 hairs in your hairbrush, because the loose hairs from the last few days will fall out.
