Does biotin work for hair loss?

Biotin-against-hair-loss

The hype is great: biotin is considered to be the absolute power ingredient when it comes to Hair loss and hair growth. And quite rightly so! Because biotin effectively accelerates hair growth and strengthens the hair roots at the same time. That's why it plays a major role in the fight against hair loss - for both men and women! Here we explain to you exactly what biotin is, what it does to your body and how you can best use it against hair loss!

What is biotin?

Biotin (also called vitamin B7 or vitamin H or I) is a water-soluble B vitamin that plays a significant role in the metabolic process. Without biotin, proteins, carbohydrates and fats cannot be sufficiently processed in the body. Biotin is also responsible for regulating gene function deep in the cell nucleus. It also helps to keep blood sugar levels in balance. Biotin is generally a miracle cure for healthy hair, skin and nails.

This is what biotin does to your hair!

The B vitamin biotin has a double positive effect on your hair: it helps the body to filter the necessary building blocks for healthy hair from the food and then have them arrive at the right places. In addition, it supports the correct reading of the DNA in the cell nucleus of the hair roots, which tells the cell how a hair should be produced. Only then does the hair follicle know exactly what to do so that a hair can grow quickly and healthily. In this respect, biotin is an important leader in the body that ensures that hair growth functions smoothly.

What happens with a biotin deficiency

If the body receives too little of the important B vitamin, such a deficiency manifests itself through extremely unpleasant symptoms:

  • Hair loss or discolouration of the beard and main hairs
  • Hair growth cessation
  • Brittle or discoloured fingernails
  • Paleness of the skin
  • Severe listlessness up to and including depression
  • Muscle pain
  • Too low blood pressure and movement disorders
  • Disorders of the heart and cholesterol levels
  • Increased susceptibility to infections

If you suffer from such symptoms, it's best to see a doctor to get a check-up to be on the safe side!

These foods provide you with lots of biotin!

If you eat enough biotin and other vitamins in your diet, you will be doing your hair, skin and nails a great favour! Knowing how to do this is not difficult, because the valuable vitamin is contained in many delicious foods:

  • Peanuts and nuts in general
  • Eggs
  • Pork and beef
  • Beef liver
  • Cheese and dairy products in general
  • Oatmeal
  • Fish
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Soybeans
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Rice

With a balanced diet, it is no problem at all to supply the body with sufficient biotin. However, one factor that can inhibit biotin intake is: Stress! If you have just too much of it in your everyday life, it is definitely advisable to additionally resort to food supplements in the form of tablets. Biotin capsules often also contain Zinc and selenium, thus providing other important building blocks that promote healthy hair growth. The recommended daily dose of biotin is at least 50 micrograms.

Is it possible to overdose on biotin?

No. So far, no side effects have been reported in the event of an overdose. There is also no upper limit for intake. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) only gives a kind of recommendation that a daily dose of 180 micrograms should not be exceeded. But that is already an enormous amount, considering that the recommended daily dose is 50 micrograms. So taking 180 micrograms would be quite a challenge!
